The direct-injection trade-off

Audi’s 3.0T is a magnificent engine with one architectural quirk: direct injection sprays fuel straight into the cylinder, so fuel never washes over the backs of the intake valves. Oil vapor from the crankcase ventilation system bakes onto those valves instead, layer by layer, until airflow into the engine is genuinely obstructed.

What it feels like from the driver’s seat

A lumpy, shuddering cold idle that smooths out as the engine warms. Cylinder-specific misfire codes logged on cold mornings. A car that just feels slower than it used to, with fuel economy drifting the wrong way. Owners adapt to it gradually — then drive a clean example and realize what they’ve been missing.

The fix that actually works

Fuel additives can’t touch deposits the fuel never reaches — that’s the whole problem. The proven fix is mechanical: intake removed, valves media-blasted with walnut shell, every trace vacuumed out, and the engine reassembled breathing like it did new. On most direct-injection Audis the interval lands around every 60–80k miles.

Prevention that helps

A healthy PCV system slows the buildup, quality oil on correct intervals slows it further, and regular highway runs beat short-trip duty. Nothing eliminates it — it’s physics — but maintenance stretches the interval meaningfully.
